Hi Phyllis,

I'll attach here the complete startup log when running CIN_CONFIG=/tmp/bcast999 ./bin/cin after updating plugin.opts.
cd ~/cingg-repo/cinelerra-5.1/ffmpeg
gedit plugin.opts
cp plugin.opts ~/cingg-repo/cinelerra-5.1/bin/ffmpeg/plugin.opts

I don't know the reason, but as shown almost every single PluginFFilter probe throws errors (Input/output error, Invalid argument, etc.) when initializing against openSUSE Leap 16.1's system FFmpeg 8.1.3, culminating in the final failure at abuffersink/buffersink:

Cinelerra Infinity - built: Nov  2 2026 14:17:48
Libav version: Lavc63.1.102
...
PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(aap)
  err: Input/output error
PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(acrossover)
  err: Operation not permitted
... [hele utskriften du limte inn] ...
[abuffer_1153 @ 0x14a24600] Sample format was not set or was invalid
PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(abuffer)
  err: Invalid argument
[buffer_1154 @ 0x14a24600] Unspecified pixel format
PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(buffer)
  err: Invalid argument
PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(abuffersink)
  err: Input/output error
PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(buffersink)
  err: Input/output error
MWindow::init_plugins: can't create plugin index: /tmp/bcast999/Cinelerra_plugins

Because so many filters fail during the probe stage on FFmpeg 8.x, the plugin index cannot be successfully generated.

Let me know what you think is the best way to handle or bypass this filter-scanning behavior for older FFmpeg versions (v. 8.1.3 on Leap 16.1).

Terje,
Thanks for the feedback.  You can see that all of the 8 previous PluginFFilter error messages went away after you updated plugin.opts.
Could you check to make sure that the last 2 do not have anything strange in the line OR that the previous line does not have extraneous blanks after the end?  If you copied/pasted from what I typed in, I might have put in a bad character.

After getting rid of the abuffersink and buffersink error, you might still get the next error so let me know.  No hurry though and use a different /tmp/bcast# file just so it is a true test.

Phyllis,

I updated plugin.opts (both under ffmpeg/plugin.opts and in bin/ffmpeg/plugin.opts) with the blacklisted 9.x / failing filters you suggested. After clearing out old/incomplete index files from /tmp/bcast555 and ~/.bcast5/, I re-tested launching with CIN_CONFIG=/tmp/bcast555 ./bin/cin.

Unfortunately, Cingg still aborts with the exact same error log during the filter scan:

Plaintext
PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(abuffersink) err: Input/output error
PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(buffersink) err: Input/output error
build lv2 index for: /usr/local/share/cin/lv2
MWindow::init_plugins: can't create plugin index: /tmp/bcast555/Cinelerra_plugins

Phyllis,

I'll try that soon.
But to have mentioned it; I use ffmpeg 8.1.3 from Packman on Leap 16.1, and ffmpeg 9,0,2 on Slowroll running in dual-boot on the same machine.

In the meantime I have also tried to copy ~/.bcast5/Cinelerra_plugins from Slowroll to Leap 16.1 without any change regarding the startup issue.

Terje,
Oh, you need to fix at least the PluginFFilter errors by adding them to the blacklist in the file plugin.opts in the subdirectory ffmpeg under cinelerra-5.1 subdirectory.  And to save time, to bin/ffmpeg/plugin.opts (so you don't have to rebuild).  Then test again using CIN_CONFIG=/tmp/bcast555 ...
At the bottom of ffmpeg/plugin.opts after these last 3 lines:
: do not work in 8.0 (just like the other cuda-s which use nvidia graphics card)
#scale_cuda ###Operation not implemented when you try to use it
#pad_cuda  ###Operation not permitted
add these lines:
: do not work in 9.x
 #colormatrix ###Invalid argument
#colorspace  ###Invalid argument
#select  ###Operation not permitted
#sendcmd  ###Invalid argument
#sidedata  ###Invalid argument
#movie  ###Operation not permitted
#abuffer  ###Invalid argument
#buffer  ###Invalid argument
#abuffersink  ###Input/output error
#buffersink  ###Input/output error

If that does not fail, then you can go back to using your $HOME/.bcast5 as usual. Let me know if it still fails after that.  Thanks for finding this and I will test and check into GIT later as I do not get these error on my older distro.

And my My AI helper / free Google Gemini :) adds:
Testing with CIN_CONFIG=/tmp/bcast5 gave a very revealing result:
The directory and files are actually created in /tmp/bcast5/ (the file Cinelerra_plugins reaches 19,279 bytes), so it is not a file permission issue after all.
Instead, the plugin indexing fails midway due to an FFmpeg filter scan error:

PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(abuffersink) err: Input/output error PluginFFilter::new_ffilter(buffersink) err: Input/output error build lv2 index for: /usr/local/share/cin/lv2 MWindow::init_plugins: can't create plugin index: /tmp/bcast5/Cinelerra_plugins

It appears PluginFFilter fails when probing FFmpeg's buffersink / abuffersink on Leap 16.1, causing the plugin index generation to abort and crash.

Terje,
Check the permissions on the directories/files involved in .bcast5.  Also for a quick test start up Cinellera as follows:

CIN_CONFIG=/tmp/bcast5 cin/bin

where cin/bin is location of your Cinellera binary.

Hi team,

I have successfully compiled Cinelerra-GG from source on openSUSE Leap
16.1, using a configuration set to single-use without third-party and
dynamically linked.

However, I ran into a persistent startup crash related to writing plugin
indexes:

MWindow::init_plugins: can't create plugin index:
/home/terje/.bcast5/Cinelerra_plugins

Interestingly, the exact same source build runs and behaves seemingly
fine on openSUSE Tumbleweed-Slowroll, but on Leap 16.1 the locally built
binary in ./bin/cin encounters permission or I/O errors when attempting
to write to the configuration directory during initialization unless
heavily overridden.

Troubleshooting steps taken so far:
- The .bcast5 configuration directory has been deleted and recreated
multiple times, but Cingg still crashes during startup.
- Three different CinGG AppImages have also been tested on the same
system without startup issues.

Has anyone experienced similar path or permission issues when running a
fresh source build alongside pre-existing environment configs?

Terje
