Patch has been checked into GIT; commit 2774a39695b82e7b7ca9979fedba63ab0fd2ab89 . Thank you Rob for discovering both the problem AND the solution and Andrea for developing the patch. I actually tried to verify that the replacement line for the negative left shift was equivalent but it was way beyond me! Reason why it was unnoticed probably because audiofile build disabled by default and probably only needed for in-tree esound build ...
