How do I crop a picture-in-picture?
I have two video tracks; one is overlayed on the other. I'm using projector automation to put the overlay video in the corner of the underlying video. I would like to crop the overlay video so it only shows the section I'm interested in. The overlayed video is a 1:1 image in the middle of a 16:9 video, and I just want to show the 1:1 bit. I can't figure out how to do this. - I thought I would be able to use the camera automation to scale the image after I had placed the projector, but while this works, it happens *before* any track plugins are rendered, and as one of these is rotation I always end up with a rotated rectangle on the screen. (With black borders.) - using the crop plugin adds more black borders. - I tried a mask, but I haven't found out how to invert the mask (i.e. I draw the area I want displayed so that everything else is cropped); plus cropped areas show up as black. - I simply can't get my head around the crop tool. The best I've come up with is to add a scale plugin to the track to resize it up a bit, so that the black wedges caused by the rotate plugin aren't visible; then adjusting the camera to zoom in on the are I'm interested in; but I haven't found a way to change the *shape* of the projector yet. It's always a 16:9 rectangle, but the area I want to show isn't that shape. What's the right way to do this? Ideally what I would like is the ability to draw a path on an object on the screen and say 'clip this object to this path'. Have you tried the "Crop & Position" plugin instead of the "Crop tool" in the Compositor? IgorBeg is the expert on usage. On Thu, Apr 16, 2020 at 4:43 PM David Given <[email protected]> wrote:

I think what he wants to do, what will really be good for him is to wear a mask. F3 in the composer. Another option is to edit this video that you want to put on top, with the measurements you want 1:1, export it like this, and then insert it into this project. I think the Cinelerra GG team should enable a channel on youtube where these videos could be uploaded. Always starting with the title: Cinelerra GG + short title, for example, Cinelerra GG: Trim clip and rotate This I think would attract users, because they are very explicit short videos, and this is really what users are looking for. For us to make a video like this takes just 15 minutes, and it would be very good to promote Cinelerra by sharing the channel on social networks. Its management would be very simple, the videos of these responses are collected and uploaded to the channel ... one minute, I drink the beer stock from the fridge ... mmm drunk ... I already see millions of channel visits and income (fully deserved) for the GG team. Jokes aside, I think it would be very good, only silent videos or with the music clips that YouTube puts on for free. Being languageless they serve everyone. Yup, that did it --- thanks very much. (Although I couldn't find any 'Adjust' menu option, and instead changed the format in Settings->Format.) That also enables inverting the mask, by drawing a mask and then setting the Fade option to a negative number, which is actually way easier than using the Crop and Position plugin, so I'll use that. Without changing the format setting Fade to a negative number just makes everything go black. Why does the colour mode of the *project* affect cropping of one particular video? This kind of cropping and masking occurs inside the compositor and should be unrelated to the project setting, surely? On Fri, 17 Apr 2020 at 20:16, <[email protected]> wrote:

Igor's page is great, but perhaps hard to find if not known. I would bet on a channel on youtube. The goal is to spread the little-known Cinelerra GG. At the beginning of the century it was the best option, but then it became very unstable and only those who knew a lot about Linux and computers were able to use it. But this has changed. The problem is that nobody knows him. For example youtubers like TJ FREE have never spoken about Cinelerra, and it is because they may not even know him. Cinelerra deserves to be broadcast. To me there are already many people who have thanked me for motivating them to change kdenlive (this toy) for Cinelerra. I have rediscovered Cinelerra a few days ago. Kdenlive is in my disk too, with Openshot and Olive. It is amazing how Cinelerra has evolved in last months, but interfaz is pedestrian compared to other options (slowing a piece of video, for example). I like it because of its apparent stability and options, but need exploring more. I'd like to see it spread and used by many people. Very happy with my rediscovering :) -- David

Thank you for your kind words about how Cinelerra has improved and about its apparent stability and options. Perhaps I misunderstand your statement on "slowing a piece of video, for example", but if you are talking about slowing down or speeding up the video, it is really easy to do this just by using the Speed line (checked on under the View pulldown) as described in the Manual section 7.3 Speed/Fade Automation and Usage Gang.

@IgorBeg I loved your videos and your website in general. I saved it in my browser favorites, in the "Treasures hidden by the network" folder I think it would be very good for Cinelerra GG to put these videos, which do not need to be explained, beyond a title, to make it easier for people to learn to get the most out of this great NLE El sáb., 18 abr. 2020 a las 9:58, Igor BEGHETTO (<[email protected]>) escribió:

There would already be a Youtube channel of CinGG; that's the one where Sam uploaded his beautiful Intro.
I would appreciate it if you would like to add videos to our official channel, regardless of your own channel, in case there is a video left. If people still prefer to fill their own channel with Cinelerra-GG videos, it's up to them. This offer is a voluntary option that we want to offer you. It's just important to me that it has a minimum of quality. That means a nice intro with the Cinfinity logo and nice background music. I want to give the new user a visual aesthetic enjoyment. As a designer I probably pay more attention to such things automatically. If you want to participate, you'll get an invitation from me and can then upload these videos directly to the official Cinelerra-GG YouTube channel. The only important thing is that no rights are violated on video and audio material, then it should be no problem. If videos are uploaded, then only under a free license, because we are not a commercial enterprise, but a free open source community. If you would like to fill the channel, you are welcome to do so and of course you can also immortalize yourself as an author in the videos. Please let us know who is interested in co-managing this channel. Best would be two volunteers, so that we always have a reserve in case someone has other obligations. It would also be helpful if these volunteers could answer to some comments from time to time. I would then officially name these new co-responsibles for the YouTube channel on our supporters page, if it's okay for them. However, everyone can contribute and provide videos. I was precisely referring to an informal channel. I don't know if you saw my proposal on this mailing list. The idea was basically to create a YouTube channel, it just occurred to me that its name could be, Informal Cinfinity. In order to upload the useful videos, which we use to respond to a user when they have their doubts. Mute videos, even without music, so that other users can quickly solve a question. For this I quoted videos of 2 minutes maximum duration. The only important thing in this case would be the title. I watch young people today, when they have a problem, they run away from 10-minute videos ... you have to be very good to make a video of more than 3 minutes and capture people's attention to the end. I make long video tutorials ... until one day to respond to a person I made a quick video, without a header, or decorations, or even music, it was about kdenlive ... it's the one people tell me the most they liked it. I removed it from the channel because kdenlive stopped liking me. As I said before, it could be Cinfinity's informal channel. El sáb., 18 abr. 2020 a las 20:50, Sam (<[email protected]>) escribió:

I like the idea with the very short videos. The longer I think about it the better I like the idea. With short videos you don't need long intros or time-consuming explanations, you get straight to the point. Nevertheless I would not like to distribute it on several different channels, but to bundle it on one channel. Let's be honest, we won't reach the masses with a niche product like with other mass software. Therefore it makes sense to bundle our common work to give new users a starting point. The Cinelerra-GG YouTube community channel already exists, we just have to fill it with content. In my opinion it doesn't make sense to work with unofficial and official channels, the content always comes from the community anyway. It would make sense to work with playlists and then bundle these small short videos of contributors there. Of course, everyone is free to create videos for his own channel, we encourage artists and video makers to do so, so there is no obligation to work with us, but it would be good to join forces with these smaller videos, because it would certainly benefit the project and ultimately all of us. As Igor also said, we can use some of his videos, so I think it makes sense to upload them to the already existing Cinelerra-GG channel. It's just my humble opinion on this subject. Very good idea to use the same channel and make a playlist for these videos. I think that you should use a space like google drive, where users can upload their videos, if they are correct, upload them to youtube and delete them from google drive, to recover the space. The only important thing in these videos would be the title, and being silent, anyone, from any language, can learn from them. El dom., 19 abr. 2020 a las 0:44, Sam (<[email protected]>) escribió:

I, having enough time on my hands (and not only in these covid-19 times) could take care of it. The procedure is not very clear to me: whoever wants to contribute with a video puts it on Google Drive, Dropbox, Youtube, etc. and then gives me the address. I unload it and then upload it to the channel. Are there other ways? My 2 cents: I wouldn't be rigid about video requests; good video/audio quality with nice intro. For the rest I'd leave the length free (yes, I also think that "short" means more appeal, but some IgorBeg videos that are essential would be left out); put a voice or not. The important thing is, if there's voice or subtitles, they're also or only in English).
From the beginning this community has decided that the only official language is English. If it were up to me, I would teach Italian to all of you... ;-) Once we have reached a certain number of videos we could put the links on the Manual, because they would help the understanding of the text. Within the channel you could create playlists for each contributor.
My idea was: · Videos without spoken locution. Optionally music if desired, but this without copyright problems. → Being without speech, anyone can understand the video, so we rule out language problems. · Explicit title, this one would be in English. · Maximum duration 2 minutes. This point may be flexible, but new generations shy away from long videos. I think that more than 5 minutes would be a mistake, with the exception of long process exceptions, but capable of keeping the viewer interested. → True, maybe 2 minutes is too little, but maximum 5 minutes I think it would be a good option. · The space could be provided by Cinelerra, Google with a mail account gives 15Gb, Mega also gives 15Gb. And make a public folder where users can upload videos. If the video is good, it is put on the channel, if is video not good, it simply is not put on the channel. Videos already uploaded or discarded are deleted from the drive to maintain available space. · Without headers or audios, it is not necessary. → For example, Igor Berg has a video on the forum in which he shows how to work with proxies, without saying a word, he explains in such a way that anyone can understand how proxies work in Cinelerra. → This is the idea. A person asked me about the Proxies in Cinelerra, My answer was, look at https://streamable.com/3z5p8# he thanked me for recommending this video by Igor. · If the author wants to sign the video, well, he can put the information that he considers pertinent so that his authorship is known. But also accept anonymous videos. →→→ I can also help as far as I can with the task of uploading the videos to youtube and managing Drive. It is as simple as creating a shared email account, where we can even redirect incoming emails, to our email accounts, of the notifications that someone has uploaded a video in the shared folder. I agree with Rafa in general. But I think it depends on the mix of the videos, the variety is important. Most of the videos should not be too long up to 5 minutes, as Rafa recommended, but I still enjoy watching a longer video from time to time. We should not only address the younger people, but all age groups. When a video is well done I watch it, even if it is longer. So I don't think there's anything against users providing us with a longer video. Of course, most videos should be rather short, but from time to time we can also publish longer videos. If like Igor delivers videos without voice and sound, then we could improve the videos a bit. For example, add relaxed background music, and from time to time a very short intro of only a few seconds, so that we have a Cinlerra-GG branding. If we've done it often enough, then this procedure goes very quickly without taking up much of our time. If you would like to occasionally add a video with sound and native language, I think there is nothing wrong with that. You can also create a short video without sound from the same video and upload it for the English speaking community. As said it depends I believe on a good mix. We can work with different playlists. Google Drive already exists with this account, so I can set it up so users can upload it there. You will get direct access to the channel and can upload it there. Please send me a private email with your Google connected email address and I will set up everything else. Thanks for your great and very helpful tips. I am very happy that you support this project so much. Sam Am 19.04.20 um 10:30 schrieb Rafa Mar Multimedia en Gnu\Linux:

Yes, thank you, I received an invitation, I see that it only allows me to manage a space in Photos, but not in YouTube, but it is not necessary either. Youtube lets you put music on videos for free from clips without copyright. And also a logo in the video, which can be seen throughout the video. My idea was to enable a public folder where users can upload their proposals. And then someone can decide if it's good or not to put on the channel. And I see very correctly what you say about being flexible with the duration of the videos. And there can be several lists, English, Italian, French, Spanish... ... but also a universal one without voice. I could share my videos in Spanish on the Cinelerra playlist. I think there was a way to do it so that the videos about Cinelerra that I publish on my channel are also automatically seen in a list in Cinelerra. It should be in the Spanish section, but they are not short... and if they are good, it is not for me to say. El dom., 19 abr. 2020 a las 14:15, Sam (<[email protected]>) escribió:

Can't you upload videos? Strange, because in the description of YT it said that you can upload videos with these rights. I check the rights again, you should have the possibility to upload videos, otherwise it makes no sense.

I tried to upload a video and everything worked fine. I then delete it because it was just a test.
