KDE 6.8 is coming out next week, and it removes XOrg, keeping only Wayland and XWayland. I wanted to keep both graphics servers so I could switch between them whenever I wanted. I found SonicDE (https://sonicde.org/), which is a KDE fork that keeps X11 and removes Wayland. However, as I understand it, it removes the KDE login manager (plasmalogin.service) and replaces it with Sonic Manager (soniclogin.service). So, I think I’d lose KDE/Wayland. Is it possible to keep both so that, when I start up my PC, I can choose which desktop environment to boot into?
Hi Andrea, This is what I found out using research tools: "I checked the official SonicDE documentation, the ArchWiki, and some statements from the developers. The good news is that *Sonic Login Manager explicitly supports launching Wayland sessions*, including KDE Plasma Wayland and Sway, even though the login manager itself runs on X11. So replacing |plasmalogin.service|with |soniclogin.service|is not the actual problem. The real issue is package compatibility. According to the SonicDE installation documentation for Arch Linux, its packages replace certain existing KDE packages. OpenMandriva also explicitly documents conflicts that prevent SonicDE and Plasma from being installed together. However, I found something encouraging: On July 13, 2026, the SonicDE developers stated that they're actively working on allowing SonicDE and KDE Plasma to coexist on the same installation. Their stated goal is to offer SonicDE for X11 alongside KDE Plasma for Wayland. I couldn't verify whether this functionality is already available in any current distribution packages. So the short answer is: *Technically, what you want is absolutely possible. The login manager already supports it. But the current SonicDE packages may prevent both desktops from being installed side by side.* For now, the safest options would be to: * Keep Plasma Wayland and install another X11 desktop, such as Xfce. * Use separate installations if you specifically want SonicDE and KDE Plasma. * Wait for SonicDE's package separation work to be completed. One additional clarification: Plasma 6.8 isn't removing Xorg itself from Linux. It's removing KDE Plasma's native X11 session. Other X11 desktops can continue using Xorg or XLibre." Which Linux distribution are you using? That would help determine whether there's already a workable solution. Sam Am 11.10.26 um 11:08 schrieb Andrea paz via Cin:

Thanks Sam, I use Arch Linux, and while I wait for updates from SonicDE, I'll probably try installing a lightweight window manager, like IceWM. The only reason I'd want to keep X11 is for CinGG. But if I can't, I'll settle for xwayland...
I saw a somewhat related Plasma/X11/Wayland discussion on the openSUSE Factory list https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/factory@lists.opensuse.org/thread/G... Terje
