News and enhancements with CinGG/FFmpeg 6.1 ?
I am wondering if the news and enhancements of importance to CinGG/FFmpeg 6.1 users may be outlined, including what is ready now and expected upcoming next? for this part you need hardware de/encoding support in GPU - so recent AMD or Intel. recent libva. For AMD also new mesa, most likely. Quite a lot of moving pieces .. someone tested at least ffmpeg's vaapi support on Intel, but because (from my reading of code) we do not do hw decoding in 10bit ... results might be less rosy than by using ffmpeg directly.

I don't know the AV1 hw limits, but it will be of interest to try this codec with FFmpeg (next year) https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/AV1 So far I just verified that the current prebuild FFmpeg 6.0.1 (packman repo) on Tumbleweed-Slowroll has AV1 Encoder support: ffmpeg -codecs -hide_banner | grep av1 DEV.L. av1 Alliance for Open Media AV1 (decoders: libdav1d libaom-av1 av1 av1_cuvid av1_qsv ) (encoders: libaom-av1 librav1e libsvtav1 av1_nvenc av1_amf ) DEAIL. wmav1 Windows Media Audio 1

Yes, I could do a much more thorough job of outlining the benefits of new versions of any updated packages with respect to how it interacts with CinGG; especially ffmpeg which is so key to CinGG working with so many formats. I will work on updating November News on the website to better explain the new capabilities, after I do some reading and testing to make sure what I say is correct.

Fine, I am curious :)
I am wondering if the news and enhancements of importance to CinGG/FFmpeg 6.1 users may be outlined, including what is ready now and expected upcoming next?
Although not exactly as requested, I have updated November News to better outline what *CinGG *takes advantage of in the 6.1 version of ffmpeg. If you can think of anything I left out as it pertains to Cinelerra, please email that. A lot of the new features are only really relevant on the command line and these are best outlined in many places on the internet already. In addition I have minimally tested new formats of WBMP and HDR and have the ffmpeg/video directory format files ready for GIT checkin.
I have tried testing AV1 capability with little success yet, but will continue to see if I can get an updated dav1d library version update for newer operating systems. https://www.cinelerra-gg.org/news-updates/november-2023-release-and-build-fa...

Re: 5, only "NVIDIA NVENC AV1 encoding support" seems to be mentioned.
What about Intel (Arc) AV1 QSV and AMD AMF encoders in FFmpeg?
AMF seems to require some additional (may be even closed-source/proprietary) components from amdgpu-pro ? https://askubuntu.com/questions/1440570/installing-ffmpeg-with-amf-support-o... https://www.phoronix.com/news/Intel-AV1-QSV-Encode-FFmpeg

Re: 5, only "NVIDIA NVENC AV1 encoding support" seems to be mentioned.
Terje, my understanding is that only the Nvidia NVENC AV1 support is NEW; we already had h264 and h265 nvenc capability (and render formats).
What about Intel (Arc) AV1 QSV and AMD AMF encoders in FFmpeg?
AMF seems to require some additional (may be even closed-source/proprietary) components from amdgpu-pro ?
Thanks, Andrew, I was not able to find downloadable examples of either QSV
or AMF files to test AND more importantly, I could not figure out the muxer in libavformat to create default format render files for either one. Thus, not too sure about the CinGG compatibility at this time.
AMF seems to require some additional (may be even closed-source/proprietary) components from amdgpu-pro ?
Yes, amf is part of AMD's proprietary drivers, namely amdgpu-pro. Other proprietary parts (OpenCL) have been put inside ROCm which is open, but I don't think they will do that for amf. Some time ago I had tried to create an x265-amf rendering profile, but it didn't work. Now I don't have any amgpu-pro parts and can't try anymore....

I expect you are right above, as I have no own experience yet with the new AV1 encoding using GPU HWA. The opensource Mesa 23.3 seems to be an option in any case https://www.phoronix.com/news/Mesa-23.3-HQ-AV1-Radeon https://www.phoronix.com/review/arc-graphics-ubuntu-2310 The ArchLinux wiki "Hardware video acceleration" is a good overview for Linux options and driver installations for Intel, NVIDIA, AMD/ATI https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hardware_video_acceleration * Advanced Media Framework (AMF) is an open source framework which allows "Optimal" access to AMD GPUs for multimedia processing using the AMDGPU PRO Stack, Developed by AMD. * AMDGPU PRO proprietary driver is built on top of AMDGPU driver and supports both VA-API and VDPAU in addition to AMF. * NVAMDGPU PRO proprietary driver is built on top of AMDGPU driver and supports both VA-API and VDPAU in addition to AMF. DEC/NVENC - NVIDIA's proprietary APIs for hardware video acceleration, used by NVIDIA GPUs from Fermi onwards. The "av1_amf" encoder is included among the AV1 Encoders on my FFmpeg 6.0.1 currently on Tumbleweed-Slowroll. Also the FFmpeg "AV1 Video Encoding Guide" has a section "AMD AMF AV1" using the av1_amf encoder https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/AV1#AMDAMFAV1
Weird, but when I list the encoders via: ./ffmpeg -encoders (where ffmpeg is in cinelerra's subdirectory of thirdparty/ffmpeg-6.1) qsv is not listed that I can see. On Fri, Dec 8, 2023 at 6:37 PM Terje J. Hanssen <[email protected]> wrote:

well, it requires intel's media SDK .... try to look at gentoo forum link I found, it lists package names. Warning, not sure how well qsv can co-exist with vaapi on any given (not so new) hw configuration, so watch out for installing files (may be rpm/deb package will warn if something about to be overwritten?)

Yes, I think we may be in some early stage while things mature. To another Jelly user question about Vaapi vs QSync - performance difference, it was estimated that QSV can be 10~20% faster than VAAPI https://www.reddit.com/r/jellyfin/comments/y7k70s/vaapi_vs_qsync_performance...

There is a longer post "FFmpeg qsv_av1" (enabling qsv hw acceleration over 2 pages!) on Intel's support forum. There might be useful troubleshooting details. https://community.intel.com/t5/Media-Intel-Video-Processing/FFmpeg-qsv-av1/m... Maybe the poster did not finish the last suggestion, but Page 2 near the end, Intel's moderator pointed at an output error: https://community.intel.com/t5/Media-Intel-Video-Processing/FFmpeg-qsv-av1/t... For the above error, this is caused by a recent change in FFmpeg master, unfortunately FFmpeg 6.1 also has this issue. Could you try*FFmpeg 6.0* instead ? Or kindly try this patch: https://patchwork.ffmpeg.org/project/ffmpeg/patch/20231127060151.2435971-1-h... <https://patchwork.ffmpeg.org/project/ffmpeg/patch/[email protected]/> ?

Thank you.
Re: 5, only "NVIDIA NVENC AV1 encoding support" seems to be mentioned.
What about Intel (Arc) AV1 QSV and AMD AMF encoders in FFmpeg? https://www.phoronix.com/news/Intel-AV1-QSV-Encode-FFmpeg
There is a longer post "FFmpeg qsv_av1" (enabling qsv hw acceleration over 2 pages!) on Intel's support forum. There might be useful troubleshooting details.

Maybe the poster did not finish the last suggestion, but Page 2 near the end, Intel's moderator pointed at an output error:
https://community.intel.com/t5/Media-Intel-Video-Processing/FFmpeg-qsv-av1/t...
Looked at the 2 above urls, but unfortunately they are using avv1 which
does not work on any of my computers.
For the above error, this is caused by a recent change in FFmpeg master, unfortunately FFmpeg 6.1 also has this issue. Could you try* FFmpeg 6.0* instead ? Or kindly try this patch:
https://patchwork.ffmpeg.org/project/ffmpeg/patch/20231127060151.2435971-1-h... ?
The above looks like a necessary patch for DECODING, but I was just seeing
if I could get ENCODING to work. I will get back to this eventually ! Thanks, Phyllis
